My Camera History and Why I Wanted to Change

For the past 17 years, I’ve been a dedicated Canon user. My trusty Canon cameras have been excellent for both work and personal use, offering impressive image quality, user-friendly menus, and great ergonomics. However, after extensive travel with heavy gear, a DSLR or mirrorless setup coupled with various lenses, I yearned for something lighter and less conspicuous.

During leisurely outings and short trips with my family, lugging around professional camera equipment wasn’t always practical. The idea of carrying something smaller and more manageable appealed to me, and that’s what drew me to the Fuji X100VI. Although I was sceptical of the hype, positive reviews caught my attention and made me take the plunge.

Why I chose the Fuji X100VI camera for Travel?

When I opted for the Fuji X100VI, my motivation was straightforward. I was in search of a camera that was portable without sacrificing quality. I wanted the performance level of my Canon gear, but in a compact form. The X100VI promised to deliver just that.

Envisioning my adventures, I craved a camera that wouldn’t burden me during daily outings or trips. With its sleek design, I could easily tuck it into my bag without having to worry about weight, and size.

The goal was to capture spontaneous moments without drawing attention to myself.

Why I Like the Fuji X100VI as a travel camera

Having taken the Fuji X100VI on several local trips, I’ve developed a good understanding of its strengths and limitations. One of the standout features is its size. It’s incredibly portable, making it easy to carry.

The camera boasts a remarkable 40.2 megapixels, which allows for significant cropping while retaining image integrity. This is particularly useful when I encounter an unexpected moment that isn’t perfectly framed. The fixed lens encourages creativity, pushing me to be mindful of my composition.

Another appealing aspect of the X100VI is its aesthetic. The design is gorgeous, especially the silver model, and feels right at home during a vintage road trip. Coupled with excellent image quality, the experience of photo editing in Lightroom is delightful.

Why It’s Not Perfect

Despite my fondness for the Fuji X100VI, it’s essential to address its shortfalls. While the fixed lens offers creative limitations, it also presents challenges when I need to zoom for a shot.

I find the menu structure less intuitive compared to Canon’s user-friendly system. Navigating through layers of menus can be quite tedious. Additionally, the camera’s size translates to smaller buttons, which can be challenging to operate, particularly for someone accustomed to larger controls.

Lastly, having a single memory card adds a layer of risk. If anything goes wrong, I wouldn’t have a backup during extended trips.

How to Decide What Camera to Take with You

While the Fuji X100VI ensures high-quality photos, composition remains critical. I’ve found that it excels in diverse lighting conditions, with its fixed f2 lens offering good performance.

When choosing my camera for a trip, I consider two vital factors: the remediability of mistakes and specific photographic needs. If I’m venturing locally, I can easily return for a reshoot if I underpack. However, if I’m travelling long distances, like to Rocky Mountain National Park, I prefer to bring more equipment to ensure I capture all potential shots.

For instance, when I road-tripped across the USA in 2024, I knew I needed versatile gear. I carried a range of lenses, from wide-angle to telephoto, to cover various subjects, including landscapes and wildlife.

Conclusion – Is the Fuji X100VI the best Travel Camera?

In summary, the Fuji X100VI is an excellent addition to my camera collection for casual trips, but it has its limitations. While it suits my minimalistic approach, there are instances-particularly for wildlife or specific compositions-where it might leave me wanting more.
